Led Into the Wilderness to…Live, Part 3

God showed up and said it was time we had a talk.  Here is our conversation:

Treasures in the Dark

The darkness is thin on good days,
a vaporous black veiling my vision
needing only the breath of God to move it,
but there is no God
here.
I didn’t mean to stray,
but wandered off alone,
seeking quiet for awhile,
except I can’t find my way
back to meaning, healing
or home.

I thought you were everywhere, God,
so where are you?
For I see no hiding places
in this bleak blankness,
and I panic more every day,
for rescue seems further away.
My best efforts fail to provide
relief, direction,
or protection from pain.
There seems to be no end
to this wounded wilderness,
so why am I trying anymore?

I know you can’t hear me,
for I’ve gone underground,
dug a tunnel for you
into the dark,
and here I wait for you.
I’m sorry, my child,
but things have to get worse
for you to comprehend
the passion I have
to take your pain to the point
that your suffering killed me.
I died from grief for your hopelessness,
took the burden you can’t bear,
and carry your sorrow now.

For healing can only come through pain,
and so much more waits for you here in the dark –
not the monsters you imagine,
but treasures of solace
held in my arms that you don’t need
when you think your arms are sufficient
to lift your own loads,
and lead your life without my help.

Only in the wilderness
when you lose your way
do you wish there was a savior
to rescue you.
So I wait for you underground,
where you will fall eventually,
and then, if you’ll let me,
we’ll resurrect together
and your treasures will be secret
no more.

Thank you for this wilderness.
I’m still very uncomfortable,
but now I understand:
you’ve led me here to live,
not to die,
for you’ve already done the dying
for me.

Surely he has borne our grief, pain, sickness, and carried our sorrow and suffering, and by his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53:4-5

I will give you the treasures of darkness and hidden wealth of secret places, in order that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God of Israel, who calls you by your name.  Isaiah 45:3

About the Author:

I never have found a box that fits me, so I follow Jesus into the wild. My husband, Bud, and I are two life-long hippies, parents of four grown children, and live in Bartlett, TN, with six cats, two dogs, and no TV. We are voracious readers and have loaded bookshelves in every room in the house except the kitchen and bathrooms. As a wordsmith, I write in long-hand everyday and use a computer by necessity. I am part of an eclectic group of Jesus-followers called Outlaw Preachers and have a passion for prison ministry. I am also an advocate for middle-aged and senior women, and anyone who suffers from depression. My musical tastes include Stevie Ray Vaughn, Joni Mitchell, old scratchy-record blues, and the great classical sacred choral works. One other thing: dark chocolate and garlic are major food groups, but not together.
